At St. Joseph Allamano School, we value the holistic growth of our learners. Beyond academic excellence, we believe that nurturing emotional intelligence, self-discipline, and moral values is equally important. In line with this vision, the Junior Section learners recently underwent a comprehensive guidance and counselling session led by Teacher Tom, the Head of the Counselling Department.

The session was carefully structured to address pressing issues that young learners encounter in their daily lives. Teacher Tom’s open, interactive, and empathetic approach created an environment where students felt comfortable, understood, and empowered to learn life skills that will shape their future.

The Bad Effects of Social Media.

One of the key topics covered was the impact of social media on young learners. In today’s digital age, children are exposed to platforms that can either inspire or harm them depending on how they are used.

Teacher Tom highlighted both the opportunities and dangers of social media, but he emphasized the risks such as:

Addiction – spending excessive hours online instead of focusing on studies or physical activities.

Cyberbully – learners becoming victims of online harassment that damages self-esteem.

Exposure to harmful content – stumbling upon inappropriate materials that can negatively influence behavior.

Distraction from academics – losing concentration on schoolwork due to constant notifications.

Learners were encouraged to use social media responsibly, under the guidance of parents and teachers, and to prioritize face-to-face interactions that build stronger, healthier relationships.

 Understanding Adolescence

The session also explored the delicate stage of adolescence—a time of rapid physical, emotional, and social changes. Many learners are either approaching or experiencing this transition, and Teacher Tom sensitively guided them through understanding what to expect.

Key points included:

Physical changes – natural growth patterns and body development.

Emotional shifts – mood swings, self-identity struggles, and a growing need for independence.

Social adjustments – forming new friendships and sometimes experiencing conflicts.

By normalizing these changes, the learners felt reassured that adolescence is a natural part of life. Teacher Tom reminded them that seeking guidance from trusted adults—parents, teachers, or counsellors—is a sign of strength, not weakness.

 Coping with Peer Pressure

Another highlight of the session was peer pressure, a challenge that most learners face at school. Teacher Tom explained how the influence of friends can be positive or negative, depending on the choices one makes.

The learners were guided on how to:

Say “no” confidently to harmful behaviors such as dishonesty, disrespect, or irresponsible habits.

Choose friends wisely, surrounding themselves with peers who inspire good values.

Stand firm in their principles, even when tempted to follow the crowd.

Seek guidance whenever they feel unsure about the decisions they are pressured to make.

Through role-play activities and discussions, learners practiced scenarios where they might face peer pressure, and they learned practical ways to respond with courage and confidence.

 Lasting Impact

The session was more than just a lecture—it was an eye-opening and transformative experience. Learners left with a clearer understanding of the challenges they face and the strategies they can use to overcome them. Teachers who observed the session noted that students seemed more reflective, disciplined, and motivated to make better choices in their daily lives.

At St. Joseph Allamano School, such guidance and counselling programs are not just one-time events but an ongoing commitment to shaping well-rounded individuals. By addressing social, emotional, and moral challenges, the school ensures that learners are not only academically equipped but also emotionally strong, socially responsible, and future-ready.

In the words of Teacher Tom:

“When we guide children today, we shape the leaders of tomorrow.”

We applaud the Allamano School Management for having this wonderful department  where learners get invigorated and their brain get sparked with life knowledge.(J.K).
